Medical Students Selected for Immersive Summer Program

Eight first-year medical students at the UW School of Medicine (UWSOM) have been selected for the Global Health Immersion Program (GHIP) through the Department of Global Health (DGH). They will travel to various countries over the summer for an intensive program to gain first-hand experience in understanding the health challenges facing people in low- and middle-income countries. GHIP is the UW's flagship global health program for pre-clinical medical students, and has supported over 30 students since its inception.

World TB Day, celebrated each year on March 24th, is an opportunity to raise awareness about the global burden of tuberculosis (TB).  The 2017 World TB Day theme is “Unite to End TB,” and some faculty from the University of Washington (UW) embodied the work by creating a new partnership in Bangladesh. 

UW Medicine’s Primary Care, Family and Rural Medicine Programs Lead National Rankings

For the 23rd time in the past 24 years, the University of Washington ranked as the No. 1 primary care medical education program in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best Graduate School rankings

The family medicine and rural medicine training programs have also led the nation since those rankings began in 1991. The UW’s doctor of nursing practice program landed in the No. 3 position. 

US News & World Report: Could Fruits and Veggies Save Hearts Worldwide?

Getting people worldwide to eat more fruits and vegetables could significantly reduce disability and premature death from heart disease, researchers report.

For the study, investigators analyzed data and previous studies to determine how fruit and vegetable consumption affected the number of "heart disease-related disability-adjusted life years" (DALYs) -- healthy years lost to disability or death -- in 195 countries. Each DALY is one lost year of healthy life.
