Program Overview

The University of Washington Department of Global Health is pleased to offer the Doctor of Global Health Leadership and Practice (DrGH) degree program, a unique practice-based doctoral degree. The DrGH provides advanced training to mid-career professionals, with a focus on evidence-based practice, preparing future leaders to achieve lasting improvement in global health.

The DrGH addresses a documented need for advanced degree programs that generate practice-based leadership skills for global health settings as opposed to doctoral programs that focus on research skills. The DrGH improves the skills of global health leaders in planning; catalyzing resources; motivating teams; strengthening national policy; and implementing, managing, and evaluating evidence-based programs in a variety of global health settings. DrGH graduates gain the ability to understand and successfully navigate and work across diverse organizations and settings, including Ministries of Health, multilateral and bi-lateral agencies (e.g., the World Health Organization, United Nations agencies), non-governmental organizations, foundations, academic institutions, and private sector organizations.

The program enrolled its first cohort in Autumn 2021 and is accredited by the Council for Education in Public Health.

At the University of Washington, diversity is integral to excellence. We value and honor diverse experiences and perspectives, strive to create welcoming and respectful learning environments, and promote access, opportunity and justice for all.
