A new scientific study concludes there is no safe level of drinking alcohol.

The study, published today in the international medical journal The Lancet, shows that in 2016, nearly 3 million deaths globally were attributed to alcohol use, including 12 percent of deaths in males between the ages of 15 and 49.

An estimated 5.4 billion people globally are expected to be covered under some form of universal health care (UHC) by 2030, up from 4.3 billion in 2015, but far below the related target in United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, according to a new scientific study.

Professors Christopher Murray and Alan Lopez, co-founders of the groundbreaking Global Burden of Disease Study, will receive the John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award.  It is one of the world’s most esteemed prizes for health research. 

Murray directs the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.  Lopez is a laureate professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia.
