A Summer in Review

Welcome back, students! This summer was a busy one for our global health community. We're happy to report a fun- and sun-filled summer with this special highlight of activities and accomplishments by our students, staff, and faculty.

Governor Inslee Appoints MPH Student Peder Digre to Advocate for WA Students

Peder Digre, a second-year MPH candidate, has been appointed by WA Governor Jay Inslee to represent students across the state on the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). The WSAC works to support higher levels of educational attainment in Washington state and provides recommendations for many policy areas including college admissions, college readiness, college credit in high school, reengaging adult students, transfer processes, tuition, and economic and workforce development for the state. 

Student Blog: My Graduate Discovery Fellowship at the CDC

Jay Vornhagen is 2017 graduate of the Pathobiology PhD program at the University of Washington Department of Global Health. He is currently completing a postdoc with Lakshmi Rajagopal at Seattle Children’s Research Institute. During his tenure at UW he published more than any other student since the Pathobiology program began in 1990. Jay received a Graduate Discovery Fellowship to work at the Centers for Disease Control from January-March, 2017 with Mary Kamb, Associate Director for Global Activities in the Division of STD Prevention.

Congratulations, 2017 Graduates!

On Wednesday, June 9, 2017, the Department of Global Health celebrated our tenth graduation since our founding in 2007. Over 150 students received degrees and certificates, including five graduates of the PhD programs, 43 graduates of the MPH program, 53 undergraduates with a Minor in Global Health, 32 graduates of the medical school on the Global Health Pathway, 11 Post-Bachelor Fellows, and 18 students that received a graduate certificate in Global Health.

MPH Student Focuses on Gender Inequality in India

From the time she was 11 years old, Halima Freudberg dreamed of serving in the Peace Corps. Hailing from Philadelphia, she studied Psychology and Gender and Sexuality Studies at nearby Bryn Mawr College.  After graduation, Halima realized her dream of joining the Peace Corps and travelled to a rural village in Cameroon.

SPH: UW Students Have Hard Conversations about Race & Disparity in London

Students share their experiences in a study abroad program examining health disparities in Great Britain in this School of Public Health news article. The program name, Dark Empire, refers to the shadow that existed after the fall of the British Empire and the health disparities seen today as a result of British imperialism. This is the program's 9th year and it is led by Adjunct Professor Clarence Spigner.
