Student, Medical Resident, and Fellow Poster Session and Awards Ceremony

Posters are out for “Uncensored: Gender, Sexuality, & Social Movements in Global Health” April 4-6 at University of Washington. The posters, designed by David Wolbrecht at UW Creative, feature a great wordle on the many topics to be featured at the conference: Immigrants, Equality, Unions, Community, LGBTQ, Women, Innovation… Please contact the Global Health Resource Center at ghrc@uw.edu to get a poster or download a copy online!
The Department hosted a lecture featuring Mushtaque Chowdbury, PhD, MS, the Vice Chair and Interim Executive Director of BRAC, one of the largest NGOs in the world on January 31. Recently featured in The Lancet, he is an expert in health, poverty alleviation, and primary education. Dr. Chowdbury discussed what makes Bangeldesh unique, and how they have achieved significant health advances despite economic poverty.
Global Health Minor students competed in ‘Global Health Jeopardy’ Wednesday night with host Charles Mock, MD, MPH, Director of the Global Health Minor Program. The three teams – Stop Smoking, Mugs, and Hot Air Balloons – had a great back and forth.
Global Health alum, Andrew Levack, MPH, received the 2013 Outstanding Emerging Innovation Award from the Healthy Teen Network for Gender Matters, a teen pregnancy prevention project he directs for EngenderHealth in Austin, TX.

The Western Regional International Health Conference Student Commitee is pleased to announce the keynote speaker is Stella Nyanzi, PhD, with the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Her current research is focused on the politicization of sexuality in contemporary Uganda – with an emphasis particularly on unpacking mainstream religious framing of and contestations about sexual citizenship. Dr.

Foege Endowed Chair in Global Health. Under the leadership of King Holmes, MD, PhD, the founding chair, our outstanding department has over 300 faculty, 470 students and fellows with 743 projects in 114 countries. The department is committed to fostering collaborative interdisciplinary programs to promote health worldwide.
The Department of Global Health is a finalist for Washington’s 2014 Leaders In Health Care Awards sponsored by Seattle Business. The Department was nominated in the global health category. The awards will be announced Feb. 24 to an audience of 300 health care executives and practitioners. This year, UW Medicine has a record six finalists for these awards.
Stephen S.
