Funding Information for the MPH Program in Global Health
Funding for the Master of Public Health (MPH) program in Global Health is highly competitive due to the large number of applicants. Despite the challenges, there are several opportunities available for securing financial assistance. To increase your chances, actively research and apply for various funding sources, including student assistantships, scholarships, and fellowships. Being thorough and proactive in your funding search is essential.
Student Assistantships:
At the University of Washington, there are three types of graduate student assistantships:
- Teaching Assistant (TA): Assist in classrooms, labs, or quiz sections.
- Research Assistant (RA): Work on research projects without teaching responsibilities.
- Staff Assistant: Perform duties such as advising or administration.
Student assistantship positions may include benefits like a tuition waiver, health insurance, and a monthly stipend. Find these positions through:
- Graduate Funding Information Service (GFIS): Located in Allen Library, with a GFIS blog listing opportunities by category.
- SPH Funding and Opportunities: Provides several student assistantships offered in several departments within the School of Public Health.
- START Center: Accepts 2-3 MPH students as RAs annually (applications open in early February).
- Department of Global Health Emails: Sent post-admission.
- UW Employment Site: Under the category "Academic Student Employee."
- Handshake: UW’s online job and internship database (enrollment is required to access this database).
Awards, Fellowships, and Scholarships:
- Fellowships: Competitive awards that generally do not require service and fund the MPH study and research. Search here for available fellowships.
- The School of Public Health offers scholarships and fellowships for eligible students. Departmental nomination is required for some of these awards.
- Fogarty International Center: The international component of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), maintains a directory listing of grants and fellowships for biomedical and behavioral research.
