After More Than 330 Daily Summaries, the COVID-19 Literature Situation Report Comes to an End

For nearly seventeen months, the COVID-19 Literature Situation Report provided up-to-date information to the public health community about scientific evidence relevant to the COVID-19 pandemic. After more than 330 daily summaries, the project – a partnership between the Washington Department of Health (WA DOH) and University of Washington Department of Global Health (DGH) – ended on June 15, 2021.

Global Health Researchers Receive $122 Million to Study Monthly HIV Pill

Global health researchers at the University of Washington have received a $122 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to test the effectiveness of the candidate drug islatravir, a once-a-month oral pill to prevent HIV.

The five-year grant will support the implementation of a Phase 3, randomized trial of islatravir, among women, in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Islatravir is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase translocation inhibitor in development by Merck for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infection.

After a Year Like No Other, the Department of Global Health Celebrates the Graduating Class of 2021

On Friday, June 11, the Department of Global Health (DGH) honored the Class of 2021 with a virtual graduation celebration. During the annual event, the 14th since the department was founded in 2007, speakers acknowledged the unique challenges and opportunities of the previous year, particularly for students entering the field of global health. 

Lee Ann Campbell Honored for Outstanding Graduate Mentoring

When Ana Gervassi went into panic mode forty-five minutes before the General Examinations for her doctoral degree, there was only one thing she could think to do. She went to the office of her faculty mentor, Lee Ann Campbell, a professor of global health and the director of the Interdisciplinary Pathobiology Program at the University of Washington.

Online Education Manager Anya Nartker Receives Outstanding Staff Award

Online education manager Anya Nartker has been selected to receive the 2021 University of Washington Department of Global Health (DGH) Outstanding Staff Award. In further recognition of her instrumental contributions to the success of DGH during a year like no other, Anya also received the UW School of Public Health (SPH) Anderson-O’Connell Award for Outstanding Staff Service, presented at the virtual SPH Awards of Excellence ceremony on June 2, 2021.

Remembering Jay Kravitz, One of the First Graduates of the International Health MPH Program

Dr. Jay Kravitz was passionate about pitching in. His understated but unrelenting commitment to caring for others fueled a prolific five-decade career in medicine and public health that led Dr. Kravitz around the world – to Ethiopia in famine, to the Thai-Cambodia border during the Khmer Rouge campaign, to Mexico City after an earthquake, and to Lesotho during the AIDS epidemic.

Summary of Evidence Related to COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness and Breakthrough Infections

There are currently three COVID-19 vaccines authorized under an Emergency Use Authorization in the US and across the US, everyone 16 years or older is currently eligible for vaccination with at least one of the vaccines, with expansion of eligibility down to age 12 likely soon. The vaccine coverage among eligible individuals remains uneven, but high coverage among adults has been achieved in some settings.
