Tell us a little bit about yourself  

I am from the Seattle area and completed my B.S. in Biochemistry and Minor in Global Health here at the University of Washington. As an undergrad, I completed research with Dr. Rafael Hernandez studying antibiotic combinations to better treat Mycobacterium abscessus. It was through my coursework and research experience that I decided to pursue a PhD. Now, I’m excited to be back at the UW pursuing a PhD in Pathobiology and following my passion for research.  When I’m not in the lab, I love to go hiking, bouldering, and spending time with my two cats, Panko and Sushi.  

Why did you decide to attend the UW for graduate school? 

I decided to attend the UW for graduate school because I was really drawn to the interdisciplinary aspect of the Pathobiology program. I love that I am able to conduct basic science research in a way that can be applicable and translatable to real-world settings. From my Global Health Minor, I gained an appreciation for looking at health through a global perspective and am excited that I can use that lens to help guide my research. 

What are your research interests? 

My main research interest is studying how we can combat antimicrobial resistance in a variety of pathogens, whether through drug discovery, new therapeutics, or repurposing antimicrobials. Ultimately, I want my research to be impactful and help those that endure these issues the most. 

What are you enjoying most about your graduate program? 

I have greatly enjoyed the variety of classes we are taking so far. Additionally, it has been great to meet my cohort and be able to discuss science and struggles together. 

Did your award influence your decision to attend UW? 

The fellowship I received has been very useful in transitioning into graduate school and I am grateful to have received it.
