Diem Nguyen is a professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, teaching Global Mental Health in the Department of Global Health. With a background in education and extensive research experience, Diem’s current work is focused on addressing the mental health needs of immigrant and refugee populations, strengthening communities and creating culturally grounded healing processes.
Diem's interest in mental health was sparked during her time as a researcher at the University’s School of Education, where she observed the prevalence of conditions like depression and anxiety among vulnerable populations, including traumas not often discussed among these groups.
Diem’s research through the Department of Global Health's MPH program further sought to shed light on the unique mental health challenges these populations face, especially individuals impacted by trauma, war, migration, and discrimination. Her current focus is driven by a desire to restore natural healing processes that may have been disrupted among these groups, and to help provide the “pillars of strong mental health” that support their wellbeing.
