Department to Offer Classes to WA High School Students

The Department of Global Health is working with the UW in the High School (UWHS) program to offer Global Health 101: Introduction to Global Health, to high school students as early as the 2014-15 school year. Global Health will be the first Department in the University of Washington (UW) Health Sciences Schools to offer one of their courses to Washington high school students under this program. UWHS courses are taught by high school teachers, and students receive recognition for their work at most public institutions and many private ones.

Dr. King Holmes to receive Inaugural Award for Impact, at WGHA Party for the Health of it

The Washington Global Health Alliance will honor King K. Holmes, MD, PhD, William H. Foege Chair of Global Health at the University of Washington, with its first annual Award for Impact at “Party for the Health of It,” Nov. 9, 2013. Dr. Holmes receives this inaugural award because of his lifelong commitment to collaboration and mentorship. Hundreds of global health researchers and professionals have been mentored by Dr. Holmes since his start at the University of Washington in 1969.

Widespread Media Coverage on PLOS Paper Giving New Estimates of Iraq War Deaths Between 2003 and 2011

Researchers from four universities, including University of Washington, conducted the first population-based survey since 2006 to estimate war-related deaths in Iraq and the first to cover the full-time span of the conflict.
All told, the researchers estimate nearly a half million people died from causes that could be attributed to the war. Their results were published Oct. 15 in the open access journal PLOS Medicine.

Leading Maternal and Child Health Expert, Dr. Ana Langer, to come to UW

Dr. Ana Langer, the keynote speaker for the Washington Global Health Alliance Discovery Series, 5 p.m. Nov. 7, 2013, at the Husky Union Building (HUB) North Ballroom, is respected worldwide as a leader in using research findings to influence policy and improve the overall quality of health care for women and families.

Dr. Langer, a physician specializing in pediatrics and neonatology, leads the Women and Health Initiative at Harvard, and for the past 25 years, she has been a leading researcher and advocate for the improvement of women’s health.

International Day of the Girl, Oct. 11th - Spotlight on Girls in Rwanda

In honor of International Day of the Girl, we're spotlighting the stories of girls in Rwanda, as told by them through digital storytelling.  The girls' digital stories are now available online, this one features Agnes and her story of caring for her siblings and starting a small business.  After Agnes' father died, her mother had trouble caring for her and her four siblings.  View her digital story
