Robert Newman, MD, MPH, is the 2014 School of Public Health Distinguished Alumnus. Dr. Newman earned his MPH in the International Health Program of the Department of Epidemiology in 1998 and rapidly emerged as a leader in global health.
Dr. Gabor Maté, the renowned author on addictions, last week told more than 100 UW health-sciences students that the educational framework they are being taught is woefully inadequate because it separates the mind from the body.
“For all the medical students, how many are taking courses on brain development?”
Only a handful of med students were in the room. None had an answer.
The Department of Global Health is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the 22nd Annual Principles of STD/HIV Research Course. The Course was first held in 1993 with the aim of offering an intensive overview of the skills needed to pursue a research career in the field of STD. Since then, more than 1,500 participants have attended. Each year, an average of 100 participants from approximately 25 different countries attend the course.
With international attention focused on the anti-homosexuality bill in Uganda, the Western Regional International Health Conference theme, Uncensored, is at the forefront of global health. Conference Coordinator Mariel Boyarsky interviewed Stella Nyanzi,PhD, a social science researcher and anthropologist at the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University in Uganda, to get her perspective on the events unfolding in Uganda, and her work on African sexuality.
This yea,r GSEC received 160 submissions from students in 37 countries. The judges selected 20 semi-finalist teams from universities in Bangladesh, China, Pakistan, the Philippines, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States. Bangladesh is supporting the greatest number of teams (seven). A trade show and rounds of competition are held on campus and open to the public Monday-Thursday. Check the schedule for more details.
Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said his agency along with the Defense Department, plans to spend an additional $45 million in 2014 to partner with 10 countries on projects to improve field epidemiology and diagnostic testing. The Consortium of Universities for Global Health inaugural video competition will showcase important global health issues and innovations.
Seattle, WA – Project Pepe, a new social impact campaign focusing on free confidential HIV testing for Latino men 18-25 years old was recently launched in the Seattle area through a National Institutes of Health grant to the University of Washington and King County.
Pepe’s mission is to draw attention to the importance of HIV testing, education and prevention in Latino communities. The campaign’s theme is “Test & Enjoy Life.” (Hazte la prueba y disfruta la vida.)
