Celebrating our Class of 2024 Global Health Graduates!

On Friday, June 7, 2024, the UW Department of Global Health held its 17th annual graduation celebration since the department’s inception in 2007. This year we celebrated and honored the accomplishments of three doctoral programs and the Master of Public Health program 52 graduates: 37 graduates in the Master of Public Health program and 15 doctoral students –  three in the inaugural class of the Doctor of Global Health Leadership and Practice program, four in the Pathobiology PhD program and eight from the Global Health Metrics and Implementation Science PhD program.

CDC endorses prophylactic antibiotics to reduce STIs in high-risk groups

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finalized its guidelines for post-exposure prophylaxis against bacterial sexually transmitted infections on Tuesday. For groups at higher risk of contracting syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea, the agency now recommends taking doxycycline, an antibiotic, within 72 hours of having sex. Connie Celum, professor of global health, medicine, and epidemiology at the UW, is quoted.

Biraj Karmacharya builds ecosystems for public health

Biraj Karmacharya has been creating ecosystems for motivated people to transform public health, especially in Nepal where he has led innovative work alongside his community. He helped expand hospital programs to serve rural populations. He created the country’s first-ever doctoral programs in public health to train future professionals. He researches diseases amongst low-income communities and works with governments to inform health policy.

AP analysis finds 2023 set record for US heat deaths, killing in areas that used to handle the heat

The death certificates of more than 2,300 people who died in the United States last summer mention the effects of excessive heat, the highest number in 45 years of records, according to an Associated Press analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. With May already breaking heat records, 2024 could be even deadlier. Kristie Ebi, professor of global health and of environmental and occupational health sciences at the UW, is quoted.

Heidi van Rooyen named chair of Department of Global Health

Heidi van Rooyen, an internationally recognized executive leader, social scientist and clinical psychologist, has been named the next chair of the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington. Van Rooyen is scheduled to begin her appointment as chair October 1, 2024, pending Board of Regents approval. She succeeds Professor of Global Health and Epidemiology Carey Farquhar, who served as interim chair of the department since 2022.  

Amanda Li on intentionality and embracing challenging conversations in global health

As a global health master’s student in the UW School of Public Health, Amanda Li has been thoughtfully engaging with Asian American communities in King County, rural communities across the U.S., and global communities in Kenya to support public health communications that align with those populations’ needs and goals. For her academic excellence and commitment to public health, Li received the 2024 Gilbert S. Omenn Award for Academic Excellence, one of the most prestigious School-wide recognitions for master’s and doctoral students.

Two SPH doctoral students named 2024-2025 Magnuson Scholars

Congratulations to University of Washington School of Public Health doctoral students Amanda Brumwell and Miriana Duran on being named 2024–2025 Magnuson Scholars! The scholarships, announced May 9, recognize one student annually from each of the UW Health Sciences schools on the basis of outstanding academic performance and potential contributions to research in the health sciences.
