University of Washington Medical Center, part of the UW Medicine health system, today earned U.S. News & World Report’s No. 1 hospital ranking in Washington state and in the Seattle metropolitan area. It is the seventh consecutive year that UW Medical Center has achieved both distinctions.
A project by the University of Washington, in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Mozambique, has received a five-year, $2.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health/Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to jump-start stalled declines in child mortality by improving interventions delivered at or near the time of birth.

August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week. In a world filled with inequality, crises and poverty, breastfeeding is the foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers. A study has found that one in four nonhuman primates infected with the Zika virus early in pregnancy miscarried, even though the animals showed few signs of infection. The study was conducted by researchers in Wisconsin, Washington, California, Oregon, and Texas

Efforts by Katrin Fabian, an MPH graduate in global health, could improve mental health care for more patients in Liberia. Research by Miriam Calkins, who received a PhD in environmental and occupational hygiene, could lead to measures that better protect workers from heat exposure.

It takes a village to save a village. A floating village, that is. Drawing on the expertise of researchers from six different UW departments, an interdisciplinary team of researchers is working to improve the health and living conditions of an impoverished floating community in the Peruvian Amazon.
“The residents have chronic health issues and diseases and we know their bodies are being attacked,” said CEE assistant professor Rebecca Neumann.
The UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), which is housed within the University of Washington (UW) Department of Global Health, has received a 5-year, $17.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to provide critical services and support for HIV researchers in Seattle.

Ali Mokdad has been named the chief strategy officer for Population Health at the University of Washington, President Ana Mari Cauce announced today. In this new role he will be responsible for collaboratively setting and executing the UW’s vision and strategy for the Population Health Initiative, a 25-year effort to create a world where all people can live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
