Sexuality in Uganda: Western Regional Keynote Speaker Stella Nyanzi Offers Her Perspective from Uganda

With international attention focused on the anti-homosexuality bill in Uganda, the Western Regional International Health Conference theme, Uncensored, is at the forefront of global health. Conference Coordinator Mariel Boyarsky interviewed Stella Nyanzi,PhD, a social science researcher and anthropologist at the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University in Uganda, to get her perspective on the events unfolding in Uganda, and her work on African sexuality.

Get Ready for the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) Feb. 24-29

This yea,r GSEC received 160 submissions from students in 37 countries. The judges selected 20 semi-finalist teams from universities in Bangladesh, China, Pakistan, the Philippines, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States. Bangladesh is supporting the greatest number of teams (seven). A trade show and rounds of competition are held on campus and open to the public Monday-Thursday. Check the schedule for more details.

Have You Met Pepe? UW, King County Launch New Campaign Offering Free Confidential HIV Testing to Latino Men

Seattle, WAProject Pepe, a new social impact campaign focusing on free confidential HIV testing for Latino men 18-25 years old was recently launched in the Seattle area through a National Institutes of Health grant to the University of Washington and King County.
Pepe’s mission is to draw attention to the importance of HIV testing, education and prevention in Latino communities. The campaign’s theme is “Test & Enjoy Life.” (Hazte la prueba y disfruta la vida.)

Global Health Leader from Bangledesh visits UW

The Department hosted a lecture featuring Mushtaque Chowdbury, PhD, MS, the Vice Chair and Interim Executive Director of BRAC, one of the largest NGOs in the world on January 31. Recently featured in The Lancet, he is an expert in health, poverty alleviation, and primary education. Dr. Chowdbury discussed what makes Bangeldesh unique, and how they have achieved significant health advances despite economic poverty.
