Research Assistant with START
Master of Public Health in Global Health
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Growing up in San Diego, California, my interest in health sciences was inspired by my mother’s journey as a long-term cancer patient. I received my B.S. in Biological Sciences with a minor in Human Rights from the UC Davis University Honors Program, where my undergraduate capstone focused on the challenges to implementation of global health principles. My passion for addressing global health challenges with evidence-based solutions developed through volunteer work for a small NGO in Papua New Guinea, where I implemented water, sanitation and hygiene programs supported by the UC Davis Blum Center for Developing Economies.
I also spent several years in the San Francisco Bay Area supporting the development of novel targeted oncology drugs, two of which entered clinical trials in 2024, while doing laboratory research in the biotechnology industry. I currently work as a Research Assistant at the UW Strategic Analysis, Research, & Training (START) Center, where I collaborate with clients at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in a variety of global health project areas. I am eager to apply my scientific background and the skills I develop at UW to addressing global health inequities.
Why did you decide to attend the UW for graduate school?
I wanted to pursue my MPH at a public university with a strong global health focus and an unwavering commitment to social justice. The UW checked all of those boxes! I was particularly drawn to the faculty’s diverse, world-spanning research initiatives and the presence of institutions like IHME and the START Center, which offer uniquely applied opportunities for students. I also love the outdoors and was excited about living in Seattle and exploring the many natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest.
What are your research interests and career goals?
My primary research interests include program monitoring and impact evaluation, health systems strengthening, and the application of quantitative methods in global health. In my future career, I hope to use data to evaluate existing global health interventions and develop effective and sustainable evidence-based solutions that improve health equity on a global scale.
Did your award influence your decision to attend the UW?
While my decision to attend the UW was already solidified, the offer of a Research Assistantship with the START Center amplified my excitement and reaffirmed that UW’s program was the perfect fit for me.
When you aren't studying, where is your favorite place to hangout in Seattle?
I’m always up for getting outside and exploring Seattle with my partner and friends. The Woodland Park Zoo is one of my favorite spots – I’m a huge animal lover and try to visit as often as I can. I also love going on long walks through the city and checking out new parks and green spaces. When I’m not outdoors, I’m probably hunting down new restaurants, breweries, or boba spots to try.
