Research Assistant and UW Fellow for Academic Excellence
PhD in Pathobiology
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am originally from South Korea, but I’ve spent over half of my life in Washington state, which I now call home. I earned my Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Washington, where I had the opportunity to conduct research in an oral microbiology laboratory, focusing on bacterial pathogenicity and antibacterial studies. After graduating, I joined a biotech startup in Seattle as a research associate, where I further developed my technical skills and enhanced my ability to collaborate within an innovative scientific community. My research interests are centered on infectious disease, therapeutic discovery and development.
Why did you decide to attend the UW for graduate school?
I chose to attend the University of Washington for graduate school because of its renowned expertise in microbiology and public health, coupled with its strong commitment to tackling global health challenges. I was particularly attracted to the UW’s focus on translating scientific discoveries into practical solutions that enhance health outcomes, a mission that aligns closely with my personal and professional goals. The UW's diverse research community and access to cutting-edge resources was also a big factor in my decision as I believe they provide the ideal environment to support my academic and career aspirations.
What are your research interests and career goals?
My research interests are centered on infectious disease, therapeutic discovery, and public health, with a particular focus on advancing health outcomes for women and children. I am driven by the goal of developing innovative therapeutic solutions that bridge the gap between laboratory research and global health challenges. My career aspirations involve conducting impactful research that addresses health disparities, ultimately striving to improve public health and increase access to effective treatments for vulnerable populations.
When you aren't studying, where is your favorite place to hangout in Seattle?
When I'm not studying, my favorite place to hangout is Gas Works Park, especially for picnics and sunset watching. The park has a stunning view of the Seattle skyline and Lake Union, making it a perfect spot to relax and unwind. It is my go-to place for a calm, scenic break from school!
