Impact of HIV, Immune Activation, and ART on Child Neurodevelopment in Kenya

This is a cohort study to characterize neurocognitive impairment in  HIV-infected children who are treated from infancy, and to determine the benefit of initiation of antiretroviral therapy in late-diagnosed school-aged children.  This project will also determine whether systemic monocyte activation is a mechanism for increased neurocognitive impairment in HIV-infected children.  Primary collaborators are mentors at the UW and University of Minnesota.  Funding is provided through an NINDS K01 career development award.
