Health Spending Efficiency

Population-level estimates of spending per health outcome by cause of death and disability can used to compare the efficiency of health spending across causes, estimate the opportunity cost of health spending, and calculate a quality-adjusted healthcare price index. We are using results from 1996 to 2016 on health spending by cause from the United States (US) Disease Expenditure Study, and on disability-adjusted-life-years (DALYs) by cause are from Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study (GBD). We separately decompose changes in health spending and DALYs into four factors: population growth, age structure, cases per population within age categories, and spending or DALYs per case. Health spending efficiency is the ratio of the spending per case effect to DALYs per case effect.
