Antibiotics for Children with Severe Diarrhea (ABCD Trial)

This double-blind placebo-controlled trial aims to determine the efficacy of a broad-spectrum antibiotic (azithromycin) in reducing risk of death and linear growth faltering in children less than two years of age presenting to health facilities with non-dysenteric diarrhea and either dehydration or malnutrition. This 25-month study will recruit over 11,000 children from 7 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia and is centrally managed by the World Health Organization Maternal, Child and Adolescent Department. The University of Washington (Department of Global Health), in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute, is overseeing recruitment of approximately 1600 children in Kenya.
