Protein kinase AEK1 as a T. brucei drug target and its potential in other trypanosomatids

This project will identify compounds that bind to Trypanosoma brucei AEK1 which may serve as starting points for medicinal chemistry to develop new drugs for human African trypanosomiasis. Additionally we will determine whether AEK1 is essential in pathogenic stages of other related pathogens, Leishmania donovani and Trypanosoma cruzi, which cause serious yet neglected diseases.
