Azithromycin to prevent post-discharge morbidity and mortality in Kenyan children (Toto Bora Trial)

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 1400 children
aged 1–59 months discharged from hospitals in Western Kenya will be randomized to either
a 5-day course of azithromycin or placebo to determine whether a short course of azithromycin reduces rates of re-hospitalization and/or death in the subsequent 6-month period. The trial will also evaluate the effect of a short course of azithromycin on bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance and will determine cost-effectiveness. This trial is being led by investigators at the University of Washington (Department of Global Health) and Kenya Medical Research Institute.
