A socio-technical systems approach for improving tuberculosis diagnosis using mobile health technologies

The main purpose of the 4-year research project is to reduce patient wait times to be diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB) by developing a user-centered, mobile device-based computing system. The targeted area is the district of Carabayllo, a resource-poor, vulnerable area located in Lima, the capital of Peru. There are two specific objectives in this research. The first specific objective is to investigate, develop, and evaluate a large-scale, real-world, well- annotated, and public available chest X-ray image database. The second specific objective is to research, develop, and validate a mobile-based computer-aided system to score the chest radiography image with improved accuracy and reader consistency. Funding is provided through NSF and NIH.
