HIV self-testing to improve the efficiency of PrEP delivery

We propose using HIV-1 self-testing to reduce the frequency of clinic visits for persons taking PrEP, and we will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of our approach using a randomized, non-inferiority trial among women and men initiating PrEP in Kenya.

This implementation randomized trial aims to reduce the frequency of clinic visits in half for persons taking PrEP with a model of 6-month PrEP dispensing supported with HIV self-test delivery for interim HIV testing at 3 months. The trial is being conducted in Thika, Kenya in collaboration with the Partners in Health and Research Development Clinic (MPIs: Drs. Nelly Mugo and Kenneth Ngure). Funding is provided through a NIMH R34 award through 2022.
