Comprehensive Malaria reduction in isolated communities

In Tanzania, despite a strong malaria program which has dropped malaria to the third leading cause of death, there are “hotspots” where malaria is not decreasing or even increasing. These hotspots are largely in isolated areas, often along rivers or on islands. The reduction in malaria in Zanzibar demonstrates what can be done in an isolated population without a constant influx of malaria-infected people enabling continued transmission. We are doing a proof-of-concept modification of Zanzibar’s approach, mobilizing and rapid-testing everyone in the village with immediate treatment, provision of treated, nets and larvicides.
