Characterizing perinatal neurotoxicant exposures in a dense urban informal settlement in Nairobi: A community-engaged approach to foster new Maternal Child Environmental Health research and interventions in Kenya

This project will pilot assessments of neurotoxicant exposures in pregnant women in Nairobi Kenya. project leverages a new cohort of 240 pregnant women (120 HIV+) and will characterize neurotoxic metal concentrations in prenatal blood specimens (N=30), will pilot a new Kenya Healthy Home Environmental Assessment Tool and will conduct a pilot home assessment (N=10), including administering a household survey, environmental media sampling and assays for urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites. Collaborators are based at the UW Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS). Funding is provided by the DEOHS EDGE Center
