Modulation of EPEC susceptibility and severity by an HIV- or antibiotic- altered intestinal microbiome.

The composition and the functionality of the intestinal microbiome in HIV-infection and treatment and its potential role in pathogenicity of enteric infections is not known. This research aims to examine the ways in which a child’s HIV-conditioned microbiome influences virulent gene expression of enteric pathogens, specifically the severity of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). This observational study is being conducted led by investigators at the University of Washington (in the Departments of Gastroenterology and Global Health) and Kenya Medical Research Institute.
