Early Infection in Women Exposed Mucosally to HIV-1

This research aims (1) to further define the relationship of viral complexity and viral subtype with systemic and mucosal viral burden and disease progression; (2) to determine if intersubtype recombinants are becoming more prevalent; (3) to determine if there are differences in neutralizing antibody responses in women who are initially infected with multiple variants versus a single variant; and (4) to examine the role of endogenous and exogenous female hormones in HIV shedding and pathogenesis during chronic disease.
