Effects of Contraceptives on Genital Immunity and HIV Susceptibility

Nested within a large randomized trial of effective contraceptives (including the copper IUD, implant and injectable DMPA), this project is conducting mechanistic studies of the microbiome, inflammation, and HIV target cells that may be altered by the initiation and long term use of contraceptives. Women in the study are from South Africa and Kenya and provide an array of vaginal samples prior to contraceptive initiation and throughout 18 months of followup. Collaborators include Kenyan and South African site PIs and laboratory colleagues from Seattle Children's, University of Cape Town, Emory University, and University of Manitoba.
