Evaluation of epilepsy susceptibility in individuals with onchocerciasis in a rural region of the Democratic Republic of Congo

In this pilot study, we identify recorded EEGs from individuals living in a rural region of the DRC known to be endemic to onchocerciasis. We conducted immuno-diagnostic tests and clinical exams to determine individuals affected by the disease. Furthermore, we conducted EEG recordings from the both affected and non-affected individuals to uncover signs of seizure susceptibility associated with the presence of infection.

Funding for this project is provided through an R21 Fogarty Award awarded to Dr. Tshala through 2018 and Dr. Kalume's Seattle Children's Research Institute seed funding.
