A specialist-generalist frame-work for viral transmission in salmon of the Northwest

This project investigates fitness and virulence differences of natural strains of a fish rhabdovirus that have evolved as specialists (infecting one host) or generalists (infecting multiple hosts). The goal is to understand selection pressures that cause evolution of specialism versus generalism in RNA viruses. Funding is provided through USDA as part of the joint USDA-NSF-NIH program on Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Disease.
