Evaluation of the Technical Support Program of the Government of Bihar

Bihar is one of India’s most populous and poorest Indian states, and its health and development indicators point to a reinforcing cycle of poverty and poor health. The Ananya program was one of the Gates Foundation’s flagship programs in Bihar launched in 2012. It represented a new approach to investing in global health, with the goal of yielding greater impacts on health outcomes and mortality and accelerating progress towards MDGs 4, 5, and elements of 6.

The program took an integrated demand- and supply-side approach to improving reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health that leveraged resources and lessons learned from several of the foundation’s Global Health Strategies to improve uptake and coverage across the continuum of family health care.

In 2014, the Ananya Program was scaled up as the Technical Support Program to the Government of Bihar. This research project is aimed at evaluating the impact of TSU program in reducing neonatal and child mortality, and malnutrition rates in Bihar for the Bihar Family Health Initiative.
