Quality Improvement for HIV Care and Treatment

The objectives of this program are:

1. To improve the quality of care and treatment of patients with HIV, AIDS and associated diseases through the expansion of the national Quality Improvement HIV Strategy (QI-HIV)

2. To support The MOH to build staff capacity at all levels for expansion of the Quality Improvement Strategy for HIV

3. To support the MOH provincial level and Implementing Partners to lead and monitor the QI Strategy for HIV at the District and facility levels through intensive monitoring and clinical mentoring/coaching in sites implementing the Test and Treat approach

One strategy to improve the quality of care and treatment of HIV in Mozambique involves the use of Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycles to effectively scale up and optimize care. The PDSA cycle will last 6 months: starting with a base line assessment of quality performance indicators. Action items are selected and prioritized by looking at the list of low performing indicators in the quality performance assessment. After 6 months of implementing the identified action items another quality performance assessment is done, the low performing indicators are studied, and a new action plan for the next 6 months developed.

I-TECH has been involved in the MOH’s Quality Improvement for HIV Care and Treatment Strategy since the inception of the strategy, through the pilot, pilot results analysis, strategy revision, and the development of updated materials to support strategy scale up nationally. After approval of the revised version of the strategy, I-TECH supported a national workshop for the dissemination of the strategy, an orientation supported the methodological orientation for central level facilitators charged with conducting the Training of Trainer for province Level team, and has provided technical assistance to the trainings at province level.

This is an ongoing project.
