Working to Get a National Paid Parental Leave Act Passed

To begin to address the poor health status of the USA compared to other rich nations, the first step is to support early life through giving parents time to parent. The U.S. is one of only two nations globally that does not have a federally mandated paid maternity leave legislation. Efforts are to draw attention to early life’s importance for adult health and to garner support for paid parental leave legislation at the Washington state level as a precursor for a national policy. Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, of which Dr. Stephen Bezruchka a board member, is working with the Economic Opportunity Institute to pass and fund legislation for Washington state to have at least a minimal paid parental leave act.
