The purpose of this double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial is to determine the efficacy of two antibiotics in reducing risk of death and linear growth faltering in children under two years of age presenting with diarrhea and either dehydration or malnutrition. Fifteen thousand children will be enrolled from 7 study sites (Kenya, Mali, Malawi, Tanzania, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan), randomized to a three day directly observed course of azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, or placebo, and followed for 90-days. Funding is provided by the World Health Organization.
