Gender Affirmative Transgender Care to Improve the HIV Treatment Cascade

The goal of this amfAR-funded study is to improve the HIV treatment cascade among transgender women (TW) in Peru via an innovative service delivery model that integrates HIV prevention and treatment services with gender-affirming transgender medical care supported by peer health navigation.  This is a 3-year 3-phase study, that will: (1) engage and educate the community on TW healthcare; conduct mixed-methods formative research to culturally tailor an informed consent model of transgender care which integrates HIV/STI prevention, testing, and treatment as part of cross-sex hormone therapy; train community stakeholders and providers about TW health; develop an interventional study; (2) roll-out an innovative model of gender-affirmative medical care that integrates HIV/STI prevention, testing, and treatment services with cross-sex hormone therapy and peer health navigation; (3) disseminate study results to scientific and TW communities, including cost-effectiveness analysis of this novel, integrated approach to TW’s HIV prevention and healthcare.
