Development and Assessment of a Tablet-based Clinical Training Approach for Nurses Providing Option B+ Services in Mozambique

Based on the Malawi experience in 2011, and subsequent 2013 WHO guidelines, early initiation of combination ART for the simplified management of pregnant HIV-infected mothers (Option B+) by MCH nurses was included as an option for low and middle income countries (LMICs). In Mozambique, rollout of Option B+ since 2014 has been hampered by incomplete training, limited supervision, and insufficient community-level education, translating to weak retention of HIV-infected women in treatment. The purpose of this study is to identify gaps in MCH nurse competencies related to Option B+, develop a tablet-based, on-the-job training approach and competency assessment in Option B+ service delivery, and assess the acceptability and impact of this approach.
