Biography 

Dr. Gupta is a jointly appointed Assistant Professor within the Departments of Health Metrics Sciences, Global Health, and Medicine. He is a pulmonologist by training.

Dr. Gupta’s research interests focus on the global burden of non-communicable diseases, where he helps lead a research portfolio funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies focused on attributable disease from tobacco use globally. He is also actively involved with the US State Department, Department of Defense, and World Bank on a variety of pandemic preparedness initiatives, a secondary area of focus.


Before joining UW, Dr. Gupta directed the Strategic Health Diplomacy Initiative at Harvard University, where he trained in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He received his BA from Princeton, MD from Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, Master's in International Relations from the University of Cambridge, and Master's in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. He is a commissioned officer in the US Air Force Medical Reserve Corps, term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and non-resident fellow at the Center for Global Development.
