Collaborative Head Injury and Adherence to Guidelines (CHIRAG) Study

In collaboration with the Jay Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center in New Delhi, India, Dr. Monica Vavilala (Anesthesiology) of Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center is leading a team of UW researchers and clinicians to improve traumatic brain injury outcomes in the United States and India. The guiding hypothesis is that adherence predicts outcomes, and that developing an interdisciplinary traumatic brain injury care pathway will increase adherence and improve outcomes after traumatic brain injury.

The project goal has three specific aims to improve traumatic brain injury outcomes in both nations:

 - To develop a severe traumatic brain injury adherence scorecard that quantifies adherence to evidence-based traumatic brain injury guidelines and examines the prevalence and temporal profile of secondary insults after traumatic brain injury occurs.

- To use the adherence scorecard to determine the relationship between adherence and to evidence-based severe traumatic brain injury guidelines and patient outcomes.

- To examine barriers to adherence of evidence-based traumatic brain injury guidelines and develop a new interdisciplinary traumatic brain injury care pathway that improves adherence, decreases secondary insults and improves outcomes after severe traumatic brain injury.

The guiding hypothesis is that adherence predicts outcomes, and that developing an interdisciplinary traumatic brain injury care pathway will increase adherence and improve outcomes after traumatic brain injury.
