Identification of Immune Correlates of Risk in HIV Vaccine Studies

To date, six efficacy trials have been conducted for the prevention of HIV infection by vaccination. Only one of these, the RV144 trial conducted in Thailand, showed protective efficacy of the vaccine. The identification of correlates or risk (i.e., immune responses that are associated with outcome, either HIV acquisition or reduction of viral load upon infection) is critical to inform the design of future vaccines: products eliciting desirable immune responses but not those associated with increased risk should be moved forward to efficacy testing. Funding is provided through the HIV Vaccine Trials Network through 2020.
