Prevalence, Risk and Protective Factors, Care Seeking and the Socio-Cultural Context for Common Mental Disorders in Sofala Province, Mozambique

Aim 1. To examine current health-facility and community-level local explanatory models, idioms, beliefs, attitudes, and practices regarding common mental disorders

Aim 2. To adapt the patient health questionnaire (PHQ) to the sociocultural context of Mozambique and pilot test its reliability

Aim 3. To apply the adapted PHQ in a 500-subject population-based epidemiologic study of depression, suicide, anxiety, and alcohol abuse in Beira City, Mozambique.
